Well, the first week home and the weather has been brilliant and I have been trying to make the most of it with a good mix of running up and down stuff and getting out on the road bike with Helen to add miles to the legs and get fit ready for next weekends blast at the Paddy Buckley Round. Fingers crossed my legs are prepared, they have certainly felt some pain this week as they adjust to ascent and descent agaiin afte 5 weeks of (fast) flat running….
I have also got my hamnds on a pair of La Sportiva Vertical K shoes whish feel awesome, so light and great traction..I will review these a a later date but here is an Irunfar review of them to give you the lowdown on this great shoe.. They are very flexible and light but feel great and comfortable when they are cinched up , totally different to the Raptor.
Here is the week so far:-
Mountain bike round the Gwydr forest – Marin Trail – great fun and exceptionally wet weather – great thunder claps all round and torrents of rain
Sunday 5th August
Spin round the Beddgelert circuit on road bikes, great day out and good to be back on bike sagain- absolutely threw it down with rain from Nant Gwynant back, which was nice!!
Evening time I headed out with Duncan up through Dinorwic quarries to scout a route for the Paddy Buckley round, up the steps to the right of Australia quarry, and back as we just had an hour. A great ascent on steep steep steps and inclines but way shorter than the other way up through the quarries on the right hand side of the tips.
Headed up the pass and bailed straight up the ridge behind the climbers club hut that goes up onto the top of Garnedd Ugain/Crib Y Ddysgl. Over the top and rolled down to Moel Cynghorion, and then over Bwlch Maesgwm, then up and over the Eilio Horseshoe, a great trip out for 2.5hrs, with loads of quad bashing ascent and descent.
Also been trying out my new running poles as I hope they will aid efficiency during the pbr. So far they are great – The Black Diamond Ultra Distance Poles, very good but rather pretentiously named I fear!!
A.M Easy jog round the classic Llanberis/Llyn Padarn circuit with Brian, good to have a gas and a recovery style run.
P.M Headed up through the quarries again onto Elidir Fach in the evening, scoping out the Paddy Buckley Round ascent again and getting some more vertical into my legs . The poles were great again too – a lovely evening and from home to the summit in 45 minutes. Well pleased
Bike Ride -Busy day today so only a spin up the Llanberis pass and back with Helen, its always such a good descent!!
Great Bike ride from Pen Y Gwryd, over to Betws, and the Crimea Pass, then back via Rhyd and a 1:6 hill, and a greta climb back up from Aberglaslyn and the Gwynant to finish – a good 70km ride with Helen, who is really enjoying some longer spins out on the road bikes at the moment. Fantastic weather and just like being abroad!!
Run early morning – Set off at 0715 and up through the quarry again to Elidir Fach via the surge pool, topping out in 43 minutes. I then carried on over Mynydd Perfedd , Foel Goch and Y Garn, before descending to the lake above cwm idawl and contouring back round to the SW on Y Garn to descend from Pen Dinas into Nant Gwynant – Another ridiculously steep descent and specially chosen to bash my legs.. It was scorching hot too as I dropped into the valley and headed back to Llanberis via a climb up through the quarries along the Slateman running route, and a shady descent through the Padarn Woods. A lovely morning to be out on the mountains.
P.M Bike Ride – Out towards Bontnewydd with Helen and we continued down to Pen Y Groes with a great climb up the Nantlle valley in hot sunshine again to finish over road from Waunfawr back to Llanberis – Legs were feeling tired at the end !
Saturday 11th August
A lovely hot day so we headed off to Trefor for a kayak trip along the coast with loads of seals and sunshine to keep us smiling the whole way. The stiff breeze that faced us on our return to Trefor was fun and ensured we were soaked and salty by the time we got back. Bella our aging hound accompanied us on this trip and it was great to have her out and about again, I think the seals appreciated her too.
Run – Late night – After a great evening watching Olympic stuff, I headed again up through the quarries on the miners steps to the right of Australia armed with my head torch and poles, and topped out on Elidir Fach 47 minutes of steady climbing after leaving the house. Good to do this in the dark, in preparation for next week to avoid losing time working out the best route….
A great climb and the descent was fun with the skies still clear andd the lights oof Anglesey,Caernarfon and Llanberis scattered below me. Not another soul out on the hill, although I reckon I saw a head torch on Y Garn…Maybe some one was going for the pbr???
